Are we alone in the universe?
This question has been asked many times and although there is no proof of intelligent life outside of Earth statistically it should exist. Of all those countless billions of stars it seems unrealistic to expect that we are alone in the universe. But what if we were?
Fifteen hundred years ago people were certain that the Earth was the center of the universe. Six hundred years ago people were certain that the world was flat. Human history can sometimes be defined by its unwavering belief in wrong ideas. Although we have come a long way in terms of scientific development and understanding we still have much to learn. To say that there must be life elsewhere in the galaxy may be a statistical certainty but it is not something that is guaranteed. At this moment there is no evidence of intelligent life elsewhere and until it is proved, the status quo of Earth being alone must remain.
So how do aliens fit into the viewpoint of general society? Interestingly some religious groups have already integrated alien existence into their belief structure. Father Gabriel Funes the chief astronomer at the Vatican has said that intelligent beings created by God could exist elsewhere in the universe.
But what if there was no other intelligent life in the universe? This is where things get interesting. If you believe in God or an alien species or both then there is someone higher than ourselves with a better understanding of the universe. Someone who could show us the way, someone to help elevate us above the childish human squabbles that afflict our society. As the majority of people believe in a higher power then how would we react if there were no other alien species to show us the way? Would we as a society rely more and more heavily on religious beliefs or would we come to accept the fact that we need to make our own way in the universe. Needless to say this is most likely a mute issue as statistically cultures on other worlds should exist. It's simply not a guaranteed certainty.
