World War II - lest we forget

Today's modern warfare has dramatically decreased the number of battlefield causalities. No longer do we carpet bomb cities or mindlessly throw more and more soldiers at the enemy in the grand tradition of attrition warfare. However with all the minor wars that seem to break out every few years it is easy to forget the climatic struggle that engulfed the world from 1939 to 1945. World War II saw he greatest mobilization of military power the world had ever seen and it also showed us how brutal the human race can be.

The following two graphs show military casualties from both the Allied and Axis powers. Note that due to poor record keeping in parts of China and the Soviet Union some of the figures are estimates. From the graphs we can see that the Soviet Union paid dearly for its involvement with 8.7 million military personnel dead.

The next two graphs show which countries had the highest military fatality rate. It is important that we remember events such as these and the impact they had on us. For if we don't learn from the past we are doomed to repeat it.
